Auto WiFi shutdown after 10 PM

A one-month experiment to test if turning off the internet at night improves sleep quality.

Observation

We both stay up late browsing the internet due to addiction, which affects our sleep and next-day energy.

Hypothesis

Turning off the internet at night will help us sleep earlier and better.

Start Date

October 9, 2025

End Date

November 9, 2025 (31 days)

Experiment Details

Automatically shut down WiFi every night after 10 PM to force ourselves to stop browsing and see if it improves sleep quality and next-day energy levels.

Experiment Results

At first, I found that we both just did things that didn’t require WiFi, like reading ebooks or playing games on the Switch or Steam.

Or we’d just use our phone’s mobile data to browse. Still ended up sleeping late. Fortunately, we live on a higher floor, so the mobile signal isn’t great. Without WiFi, we can’t do much—at most just chat with ChatGPT.

But after getting used to it, it does seem to help overall. Many times, because there’s no WiFi, I’m too lazy to leave the bedroom, so I just go to sleep with the kids. This moves bedtime up by at least 2 hours.

The only issue is that some online community events are often scheduled around 9-10 PM. I joined a couple times and got cut off right at 10 PM in the middle of chatting. So I decided it’s okay to extend it to 11 PM once or twice a week.

Overall, I think it’s a mechanism worth continuing.
